We'll be seeing destinations from Clyde Wahrhaftig's book A Streetcar to Subduction and Other Plate Tectonic Trips by Public Transport in San Francisco. Professor Wahrhaftig was a geologist who never owned a car, and wrote this book to help people find geology without cars. One of the incredible stops is a huge slickensides wall below Carone Heights Park; slickensides are rocks that are slick because they are one side of a previous slipping fault.
Meet on 16th Street on the west side of Mission (near the round BART entrance). From 10:45-11:00 I'll give a short background talk on the geology of SF, then we'll leave at 11:00. Ending time is approximate, based on past years we'll probably end around 3:00 at Glen Park BART.
The hike is six miles, with about 1,000 feet of climbing (see a map here: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/map-march-10-2025-73231e5?u=i&sh=pqelwt ). We have quite a few steep SF blocks, and several footpaths with steps. We'll leave no one behind, but be ready for hills. For those who poop out before the end, at about the 4.25 mile mark 24th Street is an easy and direct route back down to BART, this would make your hike about five miles, but with two fewer big hills.
We'll nibble along the way, and have an "official" lunch stop at Corona Heights Park. Bringing food is suggested, but there is a nice store with pre-made sandwiches (quick and decently priced) at Castro and 14th.
If you drive, I recommend driving to your local BART station because there is little or no parking in the 16/Mission area. We finish at Glen Park BART, where there's a bit more parking, so you may want to park there and take BART to 16th.
