Our favorite campsite is the Obsidian Flat Group Campground.; unfortunately is has become so popular that we haven’t been able to get it the last few years. This page is here to save details for the years when we do get a reservation.

This campground is isolated from other campgrounds, so it will just be us. It is located right below an obsidian dome, so we can explore it before or after dinners. The ‘no frills’ nature of the camp keeps the price low (but also requires early reservations!). Note: This campsite does not allow campfires.

This campground is about five miles down a well-graded dirt road that any car can handle (the last half-mile is on a narrow road that requires slow, careful driving). There are only vault toilets, and no running water, so everyone should bring water with them.

Map to campground from the highway

Here’s an AllTrails map showing how to get to the campground from Highway 395. I recommend using this to find your way there because some of the last roads are not marked well. You download the app and save the map you your phone. Google maps will NOT get you to the right location.
