Welcome to the home of hiking adventures in California that focuses on geology and natural sciences. Hikes range from 3-mile leisurely and kid-friendly hikes to 10-12 mile treks. All hikes are ‘no one left behind,’ and aim for a pace somewhere between a ‘stop every three minutes’ nature hikes and ‘we have to cover all our miles quickly’ death marches.
The science focus of our hikes tends to attract people with diverse interests. Everyone is encouraged to contribute their own questions and knowledge.
Upcoming events
Our next road trip is planned to Death Valley for December 27, 2024-January 2, 2025. Complete details and registration can be found here.
History
In the summer of 2009 I started a hiking group on Meetup.com focusing on day hikes in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The group grew quickly, and in the end of that year we had our first five day “road trip” to Death Valley. The group ran with daily hikes every few weeks, and a road trip once or twice a year.
In 2018, my wife (Katie) and I moved to Davis, and the number of day hikes decreased. In 2019, COVID shut down all our hikes. In 2021, Katie and I have worked in road trips to Mt. Lassen and Death Valley. In summer of 2023 we moved out of California, and so have not held any day hikes…but we continue to return to California for our Death Valley adventures.
We will be back in the San Francisco Bay Area in mid-January 2025, and will host a few day hikes during that time.
We hope to host trip to the Mammoth Lakes/Devils Postpile area in the Eastern Sierra in the summer of 2025.
Keep in touch
While this site has taken over as our main platform, we continue to publicize our hikes and trips on the other social media platforms. If you are active on any of the social media platforms listed below, please join the group there. We’ll always post there with links to our main details on this site.
Email and text message subscriptions
In January 2025, we’ll be launching our own email and text message subscription using the Brevo platform. This will allow you to subscribe to our announcements using a well-established platform that will allow you to easily determine whether you want email, text, or both messages.
